A REAL SELF-CARE: BEYOND THE AESTHETICS

When I mention self-care, what picture first springs to mind?
I don't know if all the guys had the same idea of self-care in mind, but I bet a lot of women do. This is really problematic, in my opinion, because over the years, social media and newspaper articles have constantly bombarded us with the word "self-care." For me, when I think of these words, I picture a girl getting her nails done, going to the spa, engaging in retail therapy, and having a lot of skin care products laid out in front of her while she takes care of her skin or goes to bed in the gorgeous silk gown. However, I see a big issue with this definition of self-care because, in the first place, everything has a cost, and in the second place, these experiences are external and just make us feel good on the outside, but do they actually nourish us on the inside?
Beyond the Aesthetic: What Self-Care Truly Means ?
For a long time, I thought self-care looked like this: aesthetically pleasing morning routines, spa days, green smoothies, scented candles. Every time I scrolled through Instagram, influencers presented an image of self-care that was effortless, gorgeous, and perfectly curated. So I tried to reproduce it.
I purchased the fancy journals, the pricey skincare, and the cosy candles. I arranged "self-care days" and photographed my smoothies, hoping to experience what they promised—peace, balance, and fulfilment. But, deep down, I still felt exhausted, overwhelmed, and distant from myself.
Wasn't self-care supposed to help me feel better?
One evening, exhausted from yet another long day, I sat down with my phone in hand, ready to disappear into another endless scroll. But instead, I paused. I took a deep breath. I closed my eyes and asked myself,
What do I actually need right now?
A flawless skincare regimen or a beautiful journal post wasn't the solution. It was relaxation. It was silence. It was approval to be there without doing anything.

I realised then that taking care of oneself isn't about appearance. It's about feeling.
✨On certain days, journaling and a warm cup of tea constitute self-care. On other days, it involves establishing limits, saying "no," and letting yourself be.
✨ The goal is to learn how to live life more kindly towards yourself, not to run away from it.
✨ It is about self-awareness, not routines. about paying attention to what your soul, body, and mind actually require.
My self-care routine has since become more straightforward, peaceful, and purposeful. It's more about what it does for me than how it looks. And in that, I have finally found peace.
So here is your guide to self-care
Whether it’s through mindful mornings, nourishing rituals, or simply allowing yourself to rest, self-care is a way of telling yourself: “I matter.” Let’s explore simple yet profound ways to nurture your body, mind, and soul
Creating a Slow & Mindful Morning
Your day's course is determined by how you begin it. Allow yourself to be present and be at peace for a few moments rather than hurrying through.
Morning Self-Care Ideas:
☕ Drink some lemon water or warm herbal tea to start your day.
📖 Keep a journal or list three things for which you are grateful.
🌿 Take some time to stretch or do some deep breathing exercises.
📵 Give your mind a peaceful start by not checking your phone first thing in the morning.
Nourishing Your Body with Love 🍵
Self-care includes not only what you eat, but also what you think and feel.
✨ Gentle nourishment:
🥗 Eat fresh, whole meals that make you feel light and energetic.
💦 Stay hydrated—water, herbal teas, and fresh juices can be calming.
🧘♀️ Move in a way that feels pleasant, whether it's yoga, strolling, or a slow dance.
Creating a Cozy & Intentional Space 🕯️
Your surroundings influence your inner condition. A clutter-free, quiet environment can help you practise self-care.
✨ How to Make Your Space Feel Like Home:
🌸 Use a candle or some relaxing essential oils.
📚 Create a cosy area for reading, journaling, or simply relaxing.
🎶 Play calming music in the background.
Evening Rituals for Deep Rest
Unwinding in the evening is a crucial part of self-care. A soothing night routine might help you transition from tension to calm.
✨ Self-Care Tips for Evenings :
📖 Read a book instead of glancing through your phone.
🛁 Relax your muscles with a warm shower or bath.
🕯️ Dim the lights to create a quiet atmosphere.
Before going to bed, reflect on your day and let go of any problems.
The Power of Saying ‘No’ & Setting Boundaries 🚪
Self-care is more than just rituals; it's also about preserving your energy. Saying no to things that drain you is equally vital as saying yes to those that nourish you.
✨Establishing Healthy Boundaries in Self-Care :
💛 Say no to things that aren't good for you without feeling guilty.
🧘♀️ Prioritise alone time and relaxation as needed.
🌱 Surround yourself with people that encourage and inspire you.
Final Thoughts: Self-Care is a Love Language 💖
Self-care is not selfish—it’s a love language to yourself. It’s about making small choices every day that bring you peace, balance, and joy.
So, today, ask yourself: “How can I take care of myself with love?” Start with one small act of self-care, and let it bloom into something beautiful. 🌿✨
